Funny bone—-Ouch!

Ulnar and radial arteries. Deep view.

I hit my elbow the other day & thought how dreadful it felt, hitting your funny bone is absolutely horrible, it’s not funny at all, WHY does it hurt & WHY is it called funny bone? Research time………O.K.

The funny bone is actually the ulnar nerve, a nerve that runs from the neck all the way to the hand, where it innervates several muscles in the hand  and forearm and ends in two branches that innervate the pinkie and half of the ring finger.

Mine are numb a lot on my right hand & my Dr. said something is pressing against my ulnar nerve because it was just my pinkie & ring finger..interesting— It’s a different nerve for the other fingers, cool!

For most of its length, the ulnar nerve is protected, like rest of the body’s nerves, by bones & ligaments. As the nerve passes the elbow, it runs through a channel called the cubital tunnel, and here it’s protected only by skin and fat, making it vulnerable to bumps. When you hit your  funny bone, you’re actually hitting the nerve against bone and compressing it. The result is a lot of numbness, tingling and pain that shoots through the areas where the nerve does its job: down the forearm and hand and into the ring and pinky fingers.

So that’s why it hurts, when you hit your freakin’ funny bone!! OUCH!  Not real funny at all…………… haha.

Why called funny bone? Because the ulnar nerve runs through your humerus bone, the bone in the top part of your arm. Humorous, FUNNY!!!! Get it?

I’m tired being teacher, I’d like recess please….
